War World II Speaker's Forums

Coming Fall and Winter 2007
(Times and Locations TBA)

KNME’s The War Education and Outreach project is aimed at New Mexico's diverse youth. We will collaborate with high school, community college and university history departments to conduct ten WW II Veterans and Civilians Speaker's Forums. The stories shared via the Speaker's Forums will reflect the cultural diversity of our state. Speaker’s forums will be held on school campuses and in the KNME studios.

Potential speakers are being identified and selected through KNME production activities. The Speaker's Forums will focus on engaging WW II stories unique to New Mexico (i.e. Navaho Code Talkers, New Mexico National Guard, Internment Camps, Manhattan Project, Los Alamos, Bataan Death March). We are also interested in identifying a speaker who can address the issues surrounding popular culture (video games, movies, news media) vs. historical fact.

Our goal is to help young people realize that viewing The War and taking part in our Speaker's Forums will lead to an appreciation of the social impact and implications of WW II while building historical awareness, empathy, and an understanding for the experiences of local veterans and civilians. We are driven to create the resources that document these first person accounts.

It is imperative that New Mexican's tell their stories. After all, they alone witnessed the shared hardship and sacrifice of family, friends, and comrades. We and all future generations are forever in their debt.
